Overview

The office of outdoor activities and sports tourism Salonica View organizes an excursion to the monastery of Apostolos Andreas.

A few words about our trip:

Our excursion will start from Nicosia and we will head to the roadblock of Agios Dometios. We will pass through our occupied villages Mia Milia, Agastina, Mousoulita, Pyrga, Stylloi, and Engomi until we reach Apostolos Barnabas. There we will make a stop at the monastery and the tomb of Apostolos and then we will continue next to the sea coastline to reach Bogazi where we will make a stop-break for about 1 hour. Then we will continue our journey and we will end up at the monastery of Apostolos Andreas for a pilgrimage. On the way back we will have time for food in Rizokarpaso in a Greek Cypriot tavern.

A few words about the Monastery of Apostolos Andreas:

The Monastery of Apostolos Andreas is a monastery located just south of the cape of Apostolos Andreas. It is dedicated to the Apostle Andreas and is one of the most important religious sites in Cyprus. The traditional history of the founding of the monastery says that, during a trip to the Holy Land, the ship carrying St. Andrew left its course and hit the rocks at the cape. When he reached land, Andreas hit the rocks with his stick, at which point a spring sprang up. The waters proved to have healing powers and restored the sight of the captain of the ship who had been blinded by one eye. Then the place became a place of pilgrimage. The church of the main monastery dates back to the 18th century, while the main buildings were built 100 years later. The monastery of Apostolos Andreas celebrates on November 30, but because on this date the weather is already wintery, and because in earlier years pilgrims traveled with animals for many days to visit the monastery, so it celebrated on August 15, when was becoming one of the biggest festivals in Cyprus.

A few words about the Monastery of the Apostle Barnabas:

The ancient monastery of the Apostle Barnabas is located about 3 km west of the ancient city of Salamis. It was built at the end of the 5th century by Archbishop Anthemios with the sponsorships of the emperor Zeno and other rich people of the time. The reason for the construction of the monastery was the finding, at a short distance from the monastery, of the tomb of the Apostle Barnabas. In fact, according to tradition, the Apostle Barnabas had appeared three times in the sleep of Archbishop Anthemius, indicating his burial place. The Apostle Barnabas was buried with a gospel on his chest. The original form of the church of the Apostle Barnabas was a three-aisled wooden-roofed basilica. A little later, the monks' cells were built around the church, while the relics of the Apostle were transferred to a specially designed space inside the church.
